Water, Water: “I Don’t Like the Taste!!”

The school cafeteria is a bizarre and jungly place. A throng of hungry students hurry about, finding tables. A peculiar but hilarious amalgamation of students surrounds you on all sides – space is limited, in a good way, when approximately 400 students crowd the gym. Sometimes, then, when your own conversation falls into a gentle lull, you hear the oddest snatches of conversation. All this to say that last week I heard some girl say “I don’t like the taste of water so I pretty much only drink fruit juices and soy milk.” Is it possible to drink other fluids primarily instead of water?
Everyone should have a steady intake of water through food and beverages every day. While there is no clear recommendation for the amount of plain water a person should drink, a healthy and balanced diet is essential for well-being. In fact, the CDC recommends getting total daily recommendations of water from a variety of healthy beverages and foods. Keeping a water bottle with you all day and sipping from it regularly can make it easier to remember to drink water. Choose water over sugary drinks – drinking these regularly can increase one’s risk for diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. What are some healthy beverages that may add variety to your diet? Low or no-calorie beverages include plain tea, sparkling water, milk, and water with fruit in it. 🍉
