How to Care for Your Skin –  By Jaanu

Basic skincare is a skill set valuable to learn at any age. With very little time involved, simple, standard actions to be taken, and enormous benefits to be had, caring for one’s skin is a low-risk great reward kind of venture.

SHIELD FROM THE SUN

Too much sun exposure can cause wrinkling and other skin problems. To protect yourself more from the sun, using sunscreen, spending time in the shade if possible, and wearing long-sleeved, light clothing are all wise choices. Wear hats and clothing that offers UV-protection (protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays).

BE GENTLE

Limit how long baths are. Avoid strong soaps and harsh detergents, and if opt instead for milder soaps and cleansers.

Try to use moisturizers that contain sunscreen (SPF moisturizers). Pat yourself dry with towel after a shower.

HAPPY DIET, SKIN QUIET

Eating lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy oil supplements promotes hydrated, glowing skin. Speaking of hydration, drink lots of water! Avoiding alcohol and nicotine can also promote bright, healthy skin.

LOW STRESS IS THE BEST

Getting enough sleep and working to reduce stress in one’s life can be valuable in promoting healthy skin. Working to get enough sleep can be difficult, especially when factoring in work schedules and personal stresses, but being well-rested restores health and also will help reduce feelings of stress day-to-day!

DANGER, DANGER

Avoid some products which irritate or dry out the skin. Lemon juice, baking soda, sugar, and toothpaste, common home remedies for exfoliating and refreshing skin, are conducive more for drying out skin – they are too acidic, too basic, too harsh, and too irritating, respectively for your face.

SERUMS AREN’T ALWAYS THE ANSWER, BUT THEY CAN BE, WHICH IS WHY PEOPLE USE THEM.

There are many different types of serums out there; skin-brightening, hydrating, anti-aging, antioxidant, hyaluronic acid, etc., etc., etc. The key to serums is understanding quality and purpose. Educate yourself on a given serum’s reviews, studies done on the products, and how the serum impacts your particular skin type before purchase and use.

Hyaluronic acid is secreted naturally in the body, and reduces in quantity as we age. Hyaluronic acid serum binds to the outer layer of one’s skin, making it appear fresh and dewy. Other serums are simply collagen supplements.
