Vote Vote Vote – Election 2020
I have never wished to be older until now. I was always the one kid in my friend group who wanted to remain age n – 1 when everyone else is longing to be age n already! But my schoolmates are turning 18 and I envy them. I envy their say in the government of this democracy and I envy their ability to make history with their choices this election season. Men of color only won the right to vote in 1870, and women fought hard for another half-century before the 19th Amendment was passed. Is it fair for Americans now to avoid the ballot when it is such a hard won right? Voter turnouts around the country have hit surprising lows – according to NPR, only about 6 of 10 eligible voters cast votes in 2016. This is shocking, considering the current political climate; nearly everyone and their cat/dog has an opinion on the upcoming election. If citizens aren’t heading to the polls or mailing in their ballots, they are refusing a right that should be a luxury. Our direct say in our government is what makes us a free country. Our rights, guaranteed by the Constitution, make us a free country. Our universal opportunities make us a free country – but there is still a very long way to go. By turning down the chance to implement change and improve our way of life with a vote, Americans lose the opportunity to see this great country reflect fully the hopes and aspirations of its great people. 🇺🇸
