It’s a Bread! It’s a Fruit! It’s a Bus! It’s a Plane!

Breadfruit originated in the Indo-Malay region and spread to the Pacific by voyaging islanders. It grows well in tropics and is used often as a source of starch. It is an energy-rich food and a good source of fiber, carbohydrates and minerals such as potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and manganese.  Quite paradoxically, though, breadfruit is gluten free. It is an important component in traditional agroforestry systems with trees yielding fruits in three to five years.
