Once Upon a December…

Even if you don’t remember the 1997 animated movie Anastasia you probably will recall the melancholy, haunting melody of its Russo-inspired main theme.
The story follows Anastasia, the youngest daughter and infamously rumored last living scion of the Romanov Imperial family of Russia. When St. Petersburg fell to the Bolshevik Revolution, the Czar and his family were killed. That sad story has been told in another Spirit article of years past.
Many, many years later, the youngest daughter of Czar Nicholas was rumored to be alive. Such rumors didn’t get absolutely disproven until late in the 1990s. That was when Anastasia was released. It is comically, completely historically inaccurate. This movie is not great for any facts – I doubt anything, but the names of characters are genuine. It is highly entertaining, and a classic to 90s children, though, so it can’t be totally discounted.
Anastasia is now an honorary Disney princess. I didn’t like how the movie ended and I probably wouldn’t watch it again. Highly recommend that you watch this at least once if you haven’t already – at least for the soundtrack. The perfect airplane film.
