Looking for a new family Christmas classic to watch? Look no further than this 2019 Netflix original. Klaus did not immediately seem promising, but 20 seconds in, I had adopted it as the new family Christmas favorite. The film follows selfish, spoiled postman Jesper to the remote whaling town (more like wailing town) of Smeerenburg. An ancient family feud dominates the miserable town, and it’s up to Jesper to get mail flowing from the town again. Along the way, with the help of a familiar, hulking recluse, Jesper manages to establish an entire tradition. It also shows some culture of an illustrious northern people – the indigenous Sámi Scandinavians. The Sámi people have long been underrepresented in TV, and the effort to showcase their stunning culture is impressive and winsome. The endearing characters, the charming animation, and the catchy, emotional music seamlessly blend to create a picture of the true spirit of Christmas.
