HACKSAW RIDGE: A MOVING TRUE STORY

REVIEW: JAANU

This is perhaps one of the greatest movies that I’ve ever seen. Regular readers might now be giving me a good-natured eyeroll – because yes, I do tend to emphatic about my approval (or lack thereof) of movies. But the startling attention to detail and remarkable accuracy to historical fact make this movie stand out.

And just when you think it can’t get better, you remember that it tells the true story of Private Desmond Doss, a medic and a conscientious objector who enlisted to serve the U.S. Army as a medic during World War II.

I watched this movie in a class about morality; Private Doss is a model of conscientious decision-making.

Hacksaw Ridge tells of a desperate battle between the Americans and the Japanese in the Pacific Theater of the war. It’s truly horrifying – horrifying that so many people died. But in the midst of that carnage, soldiers like Private Doss were doing great things. This movie reminds us that we cannot forget our fallen soldiers and we cannot thank our veterans enough. It keeps alive the memory of the legendary Desmond Doss – a hero of the uncommon variety. You might forget that Andrew Garfield ever played Spider-Man with this one. If you are squeamish, do take note that this is a gory more. But the gore isn’t for dramatic effect – it is for accuracy.
