Editorial September 2023

Dear Readers,

I remember vividly the moment I first heard the story of the “Man in the Red Bandana.” It was in my sophomore year history- coincidentally one of my favorite classes of all time. Ms. Ciccolo played a video so poignant that it drew tears from my eyes even over Zoom. It was a story about sacrifice: one man’s sense of character and duty. The Man was Welles Crowther, a 24-year-old equities trader at the World Trade Center during the attack on the Twin Towers. He was a volunteer firefighter, and when he found himself at the scene of a terrorist attack, he chose action, saving as many as 18 lives during the attack, losing his own in the process. It’s heartbreaking, learning about the Boston College graduate who had the world at his fingertips when he chose to put others before himself in the moment of need. I think about that story anytime I need to take heart and refocus on my goals, and always in September. He grew up in this region, just like me, just like my friends in high school. He could never have known what his future held, but he prepared for it with each earnest deed. When the moment to act came, he dove in with no hesitation. He believed in something bigger than himself. Or he just knew what had to be done, and did it, setting an example I know I won’t forget. Deeds speak volumes.

Love,
