Editorial September 2020
Dear Readers,
As a child (ahem, when I was younger than I am now), I was an ardent devotee of cheese pizza. Perhaps that is an exaggeration – it wasn’t my favorite food, but I really liked cheese pizza. I refused point blank even to try veggie. Last week, I was eating a slice of veggie pizza when I paused mid-chew and thought “When did things change?” I clearly remembered stalwart refusals to eat veggie pizza, and yet here I was, blissfully consuming slice after slice. I surmised that this change was gradual – maybe I tried some eventually, and slowly came to like it. 2020 is full of the same kind of change – in January, if someone had told me that I’d go to school fully online this September, I’d never have believed them. But fast forward a few months, and here we are. Situations that were completely alien in January, that left us completely nonplussed, are the norm today. When I stop to think, I feel sad that so many things changed so quickly. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that my classmates and friends will be at school without me for the foreseeable future. But I think now if ever is the time to take precautions. We are so lucky to have technology to connect us to our friends and family, no matter how far away they are. For now, I think it is absolutely imperative to continue to distance, hope, and wait, even as the 2020 academic year begins 🙂
Love,
