Editorial April 2022

Dear Readers,

A funny thing happened that made me come to an interesting realization this week. It began, as many things do, with an email. I was typing single-mindedly and determinedly…when suddenly my screen went blank, and my keystrokes became useless as only the desktop was showing. I noticed that the Mail app had quit suddenly. My mind seized on the first rational explanation. I probably typed the wrong keys, I thought. I assumed, because I tend to hold myself culpable when it comes to technology, that I’d typed some combination of keys that was a shortcut to quit. Slightly miffed, I clicked the Mail app again when an error report appeared on my screen! The Mail app was apologizing for quitting on me suddenly. It wasn’t   my fault! I delighted in the fact that I wasn’t responsible… this time. Then, I began to reflect. Why do I tend to believe that technology is infallible? If Star Wars has taught me anything, it is that droids, like humans, can make mistakes. When I spend so much time with a computer each day – because of school, SPIRIT, and extracurriculars – it’s important for me to remember not to trust the computer wholeheartedly… that is, without a backup plan.

Love,
