Women’s Euro 2022: The Drought is Over
If you’re a Boston Red Sox fan, you will understand how English soccer fans are feeling now. The New England Boston Red Sox baseball team broke the Curse of the Bambino and ended an 86-year-World- Series-drought by winning the World Series in 2004. The England Lionesses (women’s national soccer team) became the UEFA Euro 2022 champions by defeating the eight-time champions Germany 2-1 and ended England’s 56 years major tournaments drought.
Sarina Wiegman became the first coach to lead the Lionesses to a major title and the first coach to win back-to-back tournaments by leading Netherlands to the Euro-2017 title. She became England’s head coach in September 2021. She has been shortlisted for the UEFA Coach of the Year award. As per Sarina, winning comes from daily hard work and improvement. England did not disappoint the home crowds during the entire tournament by winning all the matches played. The record setting crowd of 87,192 at Wembley will never forget the home team’s triumph and the celebration after that. Coach Sarina’s planning, preparation and calmness were in display during the tournament. England never defeated Germany in the knockout games before. “You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations,” said Queen Elizabeth.
