Virat Kohli: Most Legendary Cricketer

It’s a rare phenomenon to encounter anyone who is the greatest the world has ever seen in their field. Still rarer is it to find a legend who prioritizes family and a balance in life as much as career success.

Virat Kohli is an Indian professional cricketer who plays for the Indian national team in all the three formats of the game. He also represents Bangalore’s Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League and Delhi in domestic matches. Kohli currently holds the world record for scoring the most centuries (scores of 100) in one-day international (ODI) cricket, surpassing his role model, hero, and mentor, the one and only Sachin Tendulkar. His 58.69 runs per game average in the ODI format is the best of any player to have played 50 matches or more. World records are meant to be broken, but there is real potential fir Kohli’s record never to be broken.

Kohli was born and raised in New Delhi, India with two older siblings. His love for cricket and the natural skills for the game showed early – noticed at three years old. His father taught him the value and absolute importance of perseverance and hard work, encouraging him to overcome the setback of being unable to secure a place in the under-14 Delhi team, by refusing to switch him to an influential club. Kohli’s work ethic, talent, and discipline on and off the field influenced his peers and coaches to do more for the game. In 2008, he was selected for the first time to the Indian ODI team for the tour of Sri Lanka.

Kohli achieved tremendous accolades any cricketer would have dreamed of, and he is still going very strong at age 35. He was recognized with the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2012, and won both ICC Test and ODI Player of the Year awards in 2018, becoming the first player to do so in the same year. He’s also set a record of over 146 years by scoring more than 2000 runs in both International Test and ODI cricket in a calendar year for the 7th time.

He was honored by Indian government with the Arjuna Award, India’s second highest sporting award in 2013, and with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in 2017. In 2018, Kohli was honored with the Khel Ratna, the highest sporting honor in India. The honors have not changed his fundamental humility and unshakeable drive.
