Tennis Sensation: Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu became a house-hold name in the world in overnight by winning the US Open Tennis Championship on September 11th in New York. She is an 18-year-old British professional tennis player who made her WTA Tour main draw debut at the beginning of June, ranked No 338 in the world before receiving the Wimbledon wild card entry. Raducanu is the first-ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam title as she broke through at the US Open without dropping a single set. Raducanu was born in Toronto, Canada to father, Ian, from Bucharest, Romania, while mother Renee is from Shenyang, China. Her family moved to England when she was two years old. Raducanu holds dual British and Canadian citizenships. This unique origin and background allows her to be celebrated as their own home star by multiple countries – and continents. Raducanu won the ITF Chandigarh (India) Lawn Tennis girl’s grade-3 tournament and grade-2 junior tournament in New Delhi in January 2018. She was the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Wade won the Wimbledon in 1977. She puts her success down to “very hard-to-please parents.”
“I think that from a young age I’ve always sort of been brought up to have mental strength. My parents played a huge part in my upbringing, and they were pretty tough on me when I was young, but it kind of shaped the way I am,” Raducanu told the ABC news. Congratulations, Champion!!
