Golf’s newest superstar: Collin Morikawa
Golf’s newest superstar: Collin Morikawa – By Garuda
Collin Morikawa is a 24-year-old American professional golfer who won the 2021 British Open Championship played at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England. He became a professional golfer and started playing in the PGA tournaments merely two years back, in June of 2019, and won as many majors (2!). Morikawa becomes the first golf Open debutant to win since Ben Curtis did the same at Royal St. George’s in 2003. He won his first major on his U.S. PGA Championship debut last year and joined the elite group of golfers, including Tiger Woods, who at least won one major championship at the age of 24 years or younger. And he is the first golfer ever, male or female, to win two majors as a debutant. Born in California to parents Debbie and Blaine Morikawa, Morikawa is of Japanese-Chinese descent. He graduated from La Canada High School and played golf at the University of California, Berkeley, winning five times (including the 2019 Pac-12 Championship). In May 2018, he was the No. 1 ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. In this flamboyant, noisy, and glamourous social media age, Morikawa is calm and humble in victory. He is making the winning of major championships so normal.
“I have had belief in myself since turning pro that I can do it. I want more,” he said. Congratulations, champion! 🏌️♂
