Coco Gauff: Rising Star Burning Bright
“To those who thought they were putting water on my fire, they were putting gas on my fire and I’m burning so bright right now.” With these words, an elated Gauff thanked her critics after hoisting her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open championship in New York. Gauff fulfilled her childhood dream by winning the US Open singles final, beating Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2.
She is the first American teenager to triumph at Flushing Meadows, New York, since Serena Williams in 1999. Cori “Coco” Gauff is an American professional tennis player. Her parents Candi and Corey Gauff were both Division I athletes in college. When Gauff began playing tennis at the age of 6, her mother started homeschooling her while her father became her tennis coach.
Gauff attracted the world’s attention when she stormed into Wimbledon in 2019 at 15 years old, creating history by becoming the youngest player in the Open era to pass qualifying rounds. Her progress has been steady since then but couldn’t get any breakthrough in the majors until reached the French Open finals in 2022. She reassembled her coaching staff with energy and experience, bringing together Pere Riba as head coach and Brad Gilbert as senior consultant. The core change immediately brought the success which she was dreamed of for the past four years. Gauff won 17 of her last 18 singles matches since the Wimbledon loss, including the prestigious US Open.
Congratulations, champion – we can’t wait to see where you go next!
