Bill Russell – Legends’ Legend
July 31, 2022 is the day to remember and cherish the life of Bill Russell and his accomplishments for the society. On this day, the most prolific winner in American sports history, passed away peacefully at age 88, with his wife, Jeannine, by his side. It’s a huge loss, not only for the basketball community but for the entire society which fights for social justice and peace.
Russell had to spend his childhood in poverty and living in public housing projects. Not many, including Russell himself, saw potential in playing basketball. When he was young, he was even cut from his high school basketball team. He was proof that with the right attitude and the right mentor or coach, anything is humanly possible.
Russell transformed pro basketball forever. He led his NBA team the Boston Celtics (!!!) to 11 championships, including 2 as a coach-player. He was the first black coach in the NBA. He was named as the Most Valuable Player of NBA five times. The famous Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach called him “the single most devastating force in the history of the game.”
Former Senator and NBA player, Bill Bradley, admired him as “the smartest played ever to play the game and the epitome of a team leader.” The NBA’s championship MVP trophy has been named for Russell since 2009. Russell was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for “honoring the dignity of all men.” 🏀
