What causes dandruff?

Dear Clever Cali,

What causes dandruff? Sorry for the gross question, but in the dry winter indoor heat, I feel like it’s a universal issue…

Troubled Tammy

Dear Troubled Tammy,

The condition is primarily flaking of the scalp – a mild form of dermatitis, according to the Mayo Clinic. They put it best: “It isn’t contagious or serious. But it can be embarrassing and difficult to treat.” There are a variety of causes for dandruff. One is contact dermatitis, or a mild allergic reaction your skin has to certain hair care products, for example. It can be caused by pre-existing skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Common causes can also be irritation of the skin when the scalp is unusually dry or unusually oily. Factors like age and illness can make someone more prone to dandruff. It most often starts to bother young adults and can remain until middle age. Diseases that affect the nervous system and the immune system, like Parkinson’s and HIV, respectively, also increase likelihood of dandruff. Mayo Clinic says that it’s very common for dandruff to flare up during cold and dry seasons. So how to combat?! Fortunately, treatment is fairly uninvolved. Washing hair with a gentle shampoo can remove built-up skin cells and excess oil. Medicated shampoos are also suggested. Don’t apologize for a good question! Better understanding the human body is always worthwhile.
