Editorial March 2024

It never ceases to amaze me how sunset in spring differs from the same time in winter. I can always tell that spring is on the way when I have dinner and it’s still bright out. There’s nothing as off-putting as an afternoon full of work ahead of you when it’s already pitch dark outside.
Nature has always played a big role in influencing my mood. I’d be interested in answering a research question about whether we humans have evolved to thrive off time spent outside. Whether a hankering for outdoors air is hardwired into us or not, there are some kind of intuitive lessons I feel exposure to nature always reminds me of. A long hard dark winter may feel endless while you’re trudging uphill through deep sleet, but spring always follows. Ice melts and thaws eventually. Storms pass. These examples are so trite, sorry, but there’s more! Lucky you. Another natural cycle: growth. While setbacks are to be expected in a natural environment, it’s also expected that growth overcomes anything eventually. But while nature moves slowly, there’s a really incredible efficiency present. Lots of hidden little lessons- it’s why this quote spoke to me!
